DRM Southern African Platform launch attracts great attention with first digital radio broadcast

Radio Pulpit, member of the Pulpit Media Group (PMG), has made history at the launch of the DRM Consortium’s Southern African Platform on 25 June in Centurion (Pretoria) by leading the South African radio broadcasting industry into the digital era with the first LIVE medium wave digital broadcast in South Africa.

The live broadcast, transmitted from Radio Pulpit’s DRM ready 25kW transmitter in Kameeldrift Pretoria, caused great excitement for representatives from the South African broadcasting, manufacturing, regulating, research and media industries who had the privilege to experience this  historic event, first-hand.

Following the launch, the first DRM medium wave trial in South Africa has commenced on 1 July, using a 10 kHz bandwidth on a medium wave AM 1440 kHz frequency. According to Dr Roelf Petersen, Group Managing Director of PMG and Chairman of the new DRM Southern African Platform, the trial will take approximately one year to be completed, after which results will be presented to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) with licensing as aim.

The DRM Consortium’s Southern African DRM Platform will play a facilitating and intermediary role in Southern Africa. Interested parties can look forward to a DRM Southern African workshop in October this year, which will take place in Gauteng, South Africa.
