New DRM Developments Showcasing At IBC

The DRM Consortium will use its stronger than ever presence at IBC to showcase the developments and potential of the DRM standard. Diveemo is the major new DRM development and visitors to the Thomson booth (1.D11) on Monday 13th September between 3pm and 5pm will be able to observe the first live transmission of BBC video content (in Arabic and Persian) over Diveemo. This new small-scale video application for DRM can be a cost-efficient solution for large-area distribution of educational and information video programmes including television news onto the screens of radios, unhindered by the usual gatekeepers. Diveemo can be transmitted over all broadcast bands supported by the DRM worldwide standard (LW, MW, SW and above).

All the latest developments of DRM+, the operating mode for frequencies above 30 MHz, will be on show at the Nautel booth (8.C61). The presentation on Sunday 12th September between 3pm and 5pm, will provide a quick regulatory update and an overview of DRM+ and DRM30 features, including slideshow, EPG, 5.1 surround sound and Journaline.

There have also been many advances made since the introduction of DRM30, the mode for AM bands below 30MHz, and these can be seen at the Transradio booth (8.D30) on Saturday 11th September between 3pm and 5pm, where the main focus will be on securing good coverage with DRM30 on long wave and medium wave. The session will also address the issues of power consumption, the technical requirements for DRM broadcasting, automatic equalisation of DRM transmitters and MPEG surround sound.

Finally, the Consortium is very proud to announce the inaugural DRM transmission of the Last Night of the Proms, during IBC, on Saturday September 11th between 1800 and 2200 GMT (2000 to 0000 CET). This world famous concert which concludes the biggest classical music festival in the world will be recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall and transmitted via DRM letting audiences across Europe tune into this prestigious event ‘Live’ and in high quality for the first time. The concert will be transmitted by Babcock, a leading engineering support services company and a Consortium member, from one of its facilities in the UK.

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Consortium Chairman says, “Our presence at IBC will show that DRM is cutting-edge technology that offers digital solutions for big and small broadcasters across all bands and for the benefit of listeners not just in Europe but well beyond it.”
