DRM offers an on-air transmission platform, and it is up to the broadcaster how to partition the available overall capacity and assign bitrate for the individual ‘service components’ (such as audio and packet mode streams). The broadcaster can assign a higher or lower protection level for every service component (affecting the required C/N for a reliable service at the point of reception). The main difference between audio and data service components is that individual bit errors hardly affect the perceived quality (due to DRM’s powerful concealment technologies), while for data service components a single bit error may result in the loss of a whole Journaline page (thus requiring the receiver to wait for the next transmission cycle). To take care of this special requirement of data service components, DRM offers the ‘enhanced packet mode’ configuration that adds forward-error-correction information for packet mode streams and thus allows a receiver to simply correct individual reception errors mathematically.
