Digital sound broadcasting is a much newer technology than the decade-long analogue one. It is based on compression, digital transmission and delivers, in DRM, excellent quality in all bands (AM as well as VHF) and extra data like multimedia services. An analogue standalone receiver is not easily upgradeable to digital (or rather cannot be upgraded to digital), while a digital DRM receiver will always have the possibility to receive analogue programmes as well. As a black and white TV set could not become a colour one, in the same way an old kitchen radio cannot be the new digital receiver. For more info go to: s.drm.org/latest-receiver-leaflet
