The event is a direct result of the UNESCO regional initiative launched in partnership with the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) in 2025. Its aim is to support media institutions in climate-vulnerable and disaster-prone countries and regions globally, among them four African Small Island Developing States (SIDS): Cabo Verde, Comoros, Mauritius, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Radu Obreja, Marketing Director of the Consortium, gave a well-received presentation to the high representatives of these small island countries on 27th October on the DRM Emergency Warning Functionality – EWF feature, an intrinsic part of the standard.
DRM, the only open global standard used in all frequency bands, can cover entire countries seamlessly, offering all citizens, some of whom may be vulnerable people, disabled persons or other marginalised groups with no access to traditional media, a chance to save their lives using the DRM EWF functionality. This means that digital radios can be awaken, if in standby, to receive audio, text, additional graphics, maps and simple diagrams in multiple languages targeted at the disaster areas, be they small or large.
As presented in the workshop the DRM message was clear: DRM Digital Radio does not leave anyone behind in times of crisis and ensures inclusion of every single citizen. DRM Saves Lives!
