Broadcasting Seminar – New Dimensions at Ahmedabad on 19th Oct 2013

The Ahmedabad chapter of the Broadcast Engineering Society, BES,-(India) conducted a one day seminar on 19th Oct 2013 at Ahmedabad. The theme of the seminar was Broadcasting – New Dimensions. It was inaugurated by Dr V Thiruppugazh, Commissioner & Secretary, Rural Development Department, Government of Gujarat..  Over 300 participants attended the seminar.

Presentations were made on DRM, Beyond HD, Multi Screen Delivery Platform, Cloud computing, Digital Terrestrial options in Broadcasting, OTT and Hybrid Media Technology etc.

The presentation on DRM was made by Yogendra Pal, Hon Chairman of the India Chapter of DRM Consortium. He outlined the features of DRM; demonstrated the improved sound quality of the DRM signal and the availability of a number of value added services including the Disaster Information system. The All India Radio DRM implementation plan was also detailed. He mentioned that All India Radio (AIR) already had two MW DRM transmitters of 1000 kW each, six MW DRM transmitters of 20 kW each and a 250 kW SW transmitter already in operation with 28 more MW DRM transmitters of different powers and three SW DRM transmitters, already on order and expected to be operational by Dec 2014. Another 36 more MW transmitters are being converted to DRM by AIR. Once these 72 transmitters are fully commissioned over 70% population of the country will have access to DRM transmissions.

The participants showed a keen interest in the DRM technology and its features. They found it a most effective way of disseminating information on disasters and in providing warning signals to the general public and to fisherman and ships in particular. College students found it an excellent subject for their projects. They were very glad to know that AIR MW transmitter at Ahmedabad is also being replaced with DRM.
