“DRM – Your Connected Future” Ready for IBC 2025

Digital Radio Mondiale (drm.org) Consortium specialists will unveil significant DRM news and make important announcements during its impactful, in-person presence at IBC 2025 (ibc.org), Amsterdam, the Netherlands (12th-15th September).

For this IBC edition, the DRM Consortium is putting the spotlight on receivers, additional services, and the rich benefits of the standard and its distribution.

There will be a particular focus on recent developments (i.e. digital radio decisions announced in China, Pakistan, Nigeria etc.), receivers (latest updated versions and the launch of a new DRM-DAB app available in Play Store), additional services, like the Emergency Warning Functionality – EWF and eLearning), and the overall benefits of the standard and its distribution on all frequency bands, including VHF band III.

During the first DRM event planned for September 12th guests will find out the latest on receiver solutions including video delivered using the DRM standard in a session hosted for the first time at the Starwaves (receivers) booth 8.B30h (1600-1730), part of the German Pavilion. Country updates including those from China will also feature at this event.

In the afternoon of September 13th Fraunhofer IIS (booth 8.B80 from 1600-1730) invites all those interested in digital radio to stop and join them to get the latest developments and announcements on DRM, like the R8 release of the DRM ContentServer technology and potentially an important industry cooperation project on the receiver side.

The next day, on September 14th, DRM latest news released at IBC 2025, will be presented at the Nautel event held at its booth 8.D70 – 1600-1730.

At all these events visitors can meet and network with DRM experts involved in promoting the global, all-frequency, efficient DRM standard. Company representatives of Ampegon , BBC, Encompass Media Services, CML Micro, DAC System (8.D22) Kintronic, RFmondial, NewGlee (8.F44) and other key Consortium members will be ready to network and connect with you.

Whether you will be in Amsterdam or not this year, the consortium will try to keep you updated on all the sessions.

According to the DRM Chairman, Ruxandra Obreja, “the theme of this year’s IBC is perfectly aligned with the DRM message of ensuring your connected future. Enabling modern content in very good audio quality, accompanied by rich multimedia, delivering emergency warnings (EWF) and distance learning are just some of the aspects we will illustrate at IBC 2025. We are excited about all the new announcements to be made by our members in Amsterdam. DRM is making progress in many key countries of the world. In these turbulent times, global DRM is a robust, 21st century digital platform which saves energy and spectrum; alone, among other options, DRM can ensure modern, full-country coverage.”

About DRM

Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) is the universal, openly standardised digital radio system for all broadcasting frequencies and coverage needs.

DRM on short, medium and long wave up to 30 MHz provides for efficient coverage in large areas with at least FM quality, while significantly reducing power consumption. DRM in the FM & VHF bands above 30 MHz enables flexible local and regional broadcaster-controlled services, with up to 3 stereo audio programmes plus multimedia components in half the bandwidth of a single analogue FM signal.

Advanced radio functionality thanks to DRM comprises: More services based on the highly efficient audio codec MPEG xHE-AAC and free-to-air Journaline multi-lingual text information, detailed service signalling, service linking (including to analogue AM/FM services) and DRM EWF – Emergency Warning Functionality. Enhanced DRM features include native Unicode support, station logos via SPI, Slideshow images and traffic and travel information.

The DRM Consortium was awarded by ITU for its outstanding contribution to the Telecommunications sector over the past years and has signed the EBU Smart Radio Memorandum that promotes access to free to air radio on all devices.
