A delegation from Papua New Guinea visited RRI Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on 18–19 May 2026 to learn more about Indonesia’s implementation of digital radio technologies. The direct purpose of this visit was to provide technical understanding to the delegation from the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) of Papua New Guinea regarding the implementation of digital radio broadcasting in Indonesia. The visit included technical presentations, covering digital broadcasting system architecture, frequency spectrum utilisation, operational experiences, implementation challenges, and lessons learned from the operation of DRM and DAB+ services. In addition, there was a site visit to the digital broadcasting facilities at RRI Yogyakarta where the PNG delegation could witness a demonstration of multimode DRM/DAB+/FM/AM receiver radios, which successfully proved the capability of receiving DAB, DRM, FM, and AM signals in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Papua New Guinea, like Indonesia, faces challenging geographical conditions with mountainous regions and many islands requiring efficient and flexible radio coverage solutions. DRM, as the only open digital broadcasting standard designed for use across all broadcast bands and proven to work across such diverse environments, is particularly well suited to these coverage requirements.
During the visit there were intense discussions between the Papua New Guinea delegation and the technical teams from RRI and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs of Indonesia. Through this activity, the Papua New Guinea delegation gained a more comprehensive understanding of digital radio technology implementation.
Overall, this technical visit strengthened the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, particularly in the development of digital radio broadcasting and cross-border frequency coordination. The results of this kind of contact should support the future implementation and development of the open digital broadcast technologies like DRM in Papua New Guinea.
