Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) to hold first comprehensive workshop in Turkey for Public Broadcaster TRT

Press Release

The DRM Consortium is organising a practical one-day workshop for the Turkish public service broadcaster TRT in Ankara on 18th September. The features and benefits of DRM standard (DRM30 and DRM+) will be presented to key Turkish decision makers from public service broadcaster TRT and Turkish regulator RTUK, interested in an optimum solution for radio digitisation in the country.

The workshop will be a “hands-on” event and will include a live DRM broadcast for the audience to experience digital radio onsite.

Dr. Mesut Ertanhan, Director of TRT’s Training Department, says: We will have the chance to examine the comparative advantages of digital radio over analogue AM and FM, the efficiency and sound quality of digital radio including the value added services. This workshop will be very beneficial to the regulatory bodies and the broadcasting organizations in Turkey. In the broadcast digitization process, now underway in Turkey, the workshop will be a great opportunity to discuss different solutions, create awareness and familiarization with the DRM system. The Turkish public service broadcaster, TRT, the host of this event, would like to extend its sincere thanks, in advance, to the DRM Consortium for taking the initiative to organize such an informative workshop. We also appreciate the valuable contribution of the Consortium experts that will speak in the TRT conference hall in Ankara where they will also organize various DRM demonstrations and a live DRM broadcast reception.”

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Chairman, says: “this first comprehensive DRM event in the country will demonstrate how DRM can meet the demands of public broadcaster TRT and the Turkish listeners, whether in big cities or rural areas. We are encouraged by the interest of TRT at the highest level, and hope this will be the beginning of a strong cooperation with the public broadcaster, the regulator and the vibrant Turkish broadcasting media in general.”

The DRM standard is the only global standard which can be used in all radio frequency bands and is ideal for large and diverse countries such as Turkey, whose public broadcaster TRT will be able to broadcast its digital radio programmes with enhanced content and in excellent sound quality throughout Turkey.

About DRM

Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) is the universal, openly standardised digital broadcasting system for all broadcasting frequencies.

The DRM standard comprises two major configurations: DRM30, intended for broadcasts on short, medium and long wave up to 30 MHz and providing large coverage areas and low power consumption; and DRM+, the configuration for VHF bands above 30 MHz tailored for local and regional coverage with broadcaster-controlled transmissions.

All DRM configurations share the same audio coding, data and multimedia services, service linking, multiplexing and signalling schemes.  DRM provides high-quality sound combined with a wealth of enhanced features: Surround Sound, Journaline text information, Slideshow, EPG, and data services.
