30 Mar DRM Consortium to Review Successful 2020 and Set Strategy for 2021- 2022
The DRM Consortium will hold its second virtual General Assembly on 15th April with the participation of members and guests from all over the world.
The morning session, open to members and invited guests, will review progress made in the past year in countries like India, South Africa, Indonesia, Brazil and others like Hungary or Russia.
The fast developments of DRM receivers have their special slot on the agenda as well. The receiver presentation will focus on the almost 3 million DRM receivers in Indian cars and the new consumer receiver models (standalone, car solutions and adaptors, SDR and mobile solutions) from China, India, Germany, UK. Now they are supporting the full DRM standard (AM and FM) and all the DRM features set giving extra benefits like EWF (Emergency Warning Functionality), distance learning, extra content in various languages.
The agenda includes a special update on the recent Indian DRM trial in the FM band, coupled with the initiatives of the recently created DRM India automotive group.
The online meeting will give members and guests a chance to share news and ideas, and to contribute to the strategic directions of the Consortium in the following months. The Consortium will continue to strengthen the links with the automotive and receiver industry and will enhance the general communication, virtual, two-way and face to face, in new and innovative ways.
According to DRM Chairman, Ruxandra Obreja: “In the last challenging 12 months radio has proven its great staying power and enhanced role. Digital radio DRM has proven to be flexible, as DRM digital broadcasts can be easily inserted even in what looks like a full FM band spectrum. We have also proven that DRM can offer distance learning, and disaster warnings at low energy costs which we see gaining in importance and usage. With the support of regulators, broadcasters, the industry and the listeners, DRM will be making it possible for everyone, no matter where they are and, whether they are connected to modern technology or not, to stay safe, informed and educated.”
Digital Radio Mondiale™ (DRM) is the universal, openly standardised digital radio system for all broadcasting frequencies and coverage needs.
DRM on short, medium and long wave up to 30 MHz provides for the efficient coverage in large areas with at least FM quality, while significantly reducing power consumption. DRM in the FM & VHF bands above 30 MHz enables flexible local and regional broadcaster-controlled services, with up to 3 stereo audio programmes plus multimedia components in half the bandwidth of a single analogue FM signal.
Advanced radio functionality thanks to DRM comprises: More services based on the highly efficient audio codec MPEG xHE-AAC and free-to-air Journaline multi-lingual text information, detailed service signalling, service linking (including to analogue AM/FM services) and DRM EWF – Emergency Warning Functionality. Enhanced DRM features include native Unicode support, station logos via SPI, Slideshow images and traffic and travel information.
The DRM Consortium was awarded by ITU for its outstanding contribution to the Telecommunications sector over the past years and has signed the EBU Smart Radio Memorandum that promotes access to free to air radio on all devices.
