August is in many parts of the world a quiet, holiday month. But it seems that for DRM it is anything but quiet. The big news from China is the adoption of DRM as the national standard for shortwave and medium-wave digital broadcasting. Please scroll down to get information about this milestone.

All this time we will continue to prepare for IBC 2025. The DRM events under the theme “Your Connected Future” on September 12-13 promise to unveil quite a few interesting developments and products.

DRM in HF and AM Becomes National Standard in China
On August 1, 2025, China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) publicly announced the release of the official industry standard GY/T 423-2025, titled “Technical Specifications for Medium and Short-Wave Digital Sound Broadcasting”, which had been officially issued on July 29, 2025.
With this publication, NRTA formally adopts the global Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) standard as the technical foundation for digital broadcasting in the AM bands for domestic radio services in China.
The NRTA is a ministry-level regulator overseeing broadcasting and audio-visual services in China. It regularly issues industry standards (GY/T) that define recommended technical specifications for broadcasters and manufacturers.

DRM Marks New Developments in Indonesia
One of the most populous countries in Asia and the world, home to around 17,000 islands, Indonesia has fully embraced DRM and is making steady progress towards its roll out.

DRM at CBU General Assembly
The DRM Consortium has been again invited by its institutional member CBU at its 56th Annual General Assembly of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union to be held August 18-20 in Bridgetown, Barbados. DRM and its innovative way of delivering education is the theme of the DRM presentation.

DRM Digital Radio at IBC 2025
The DRM consortium is planning an impactful, in-person presence at IBC 2025, Amsterdam, the Netherlands (12th-15th September).
The DRM Consortium is perfectly aligned with the themes of IBC 2025 (“Shaping the Future”), planning to demonstrate in Hall 8, RAI convention centre, over two days that digital radio DRM is the future and holds a key part among the digital platforms of our times.

DRM Spotlight on DRM – Brazilian Engineer Highlights DRM Opportunities
Brazilian broadcast engineer Ricardo Gurgel has published a series of thoughtful articles on Brazil’s digital radio future – with a clear focus on the strengths and suitability of the open DRM standard.
