A round table discussion was organized by Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) for technical collaboration between public sector undertakings (PSUs) and global companies in last week of August 2013. The meeting was Chaired by Secretary and Joint secretary, Ministry of Communications and IT. Historically, PSUs were set by the Government to foster growth and provide security to some specific industries. These PSUs not only generated employment in the country but also manufactured many products for strategic use and other industrial, communications and consumer applications. Most of the PSUs performed well and catered to the domestic needs extremely well and some of them managed to export to other countries. The PSUs have an excellent infrastructure, capital equipment and human resources. They are now on the lookout for newer products to diversify and increase business. An august gathering of nearly 50 people from various PSUs who attended the meeting heard global companies talking of various technologies and possibilities for collaboration. DRM Consortium was represented by T.V.B.Subrahmanyam to give a presentation on the DRM Technology. The presentation stressed on excellent opportunity that this technology, embraced by All India Radio (AIR) in a big way, is available for PSUs to manufacture digital radio receivers. AIR’s digitalization plan and geographic and population coverage of with this digital technology was shared. A few decades back some of these companies were making analog radios till radio as a product actually migrated to cottage industry. The PSUs now have the opportunity to revive those production lines, this time with latest technology digital radio receivers.
