The annual meeting of the German DRM Platform took place on June 16 and 17 in Ahrweiler, Rhineland-Palatinate, close to the city of Bonn.
The main subject of the first day was the discussion about DRM with members of the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance. Following the DRM presentation, participants considered various scenarios and applications. Since during the catastrophic flooding in the Ahr Valley in 2021, conventional communication channels largely remained functional and were quickly restored, one possible DRM application lies in communication and data provision at command level. As an example of a radio application for public warning currently being introduced, the ASA system for DAB+ was briefly explained and and its current implementation in Germany was presented.
Following a review of the activities and an outlook on upcoming projects of the Consortium, a report was given on Europasender Waldheim, a German DRM shortwave transmitter with regional coverage, with further DRM broadcasts planned. In addition, the activities carried out on the UNESCO World Radio Day in February were reviewed, which were organized by the DRM Consortium together with its members. The demo broadcasts involved Media Broadcast, transmitting in shortwave from its Nauen transmitter site in Germany with transmissions targeting areas in Africa and Asia. The transmitter Europasender Waldheim was also part of the project. During the meeting it was announced that the longwave transmitter in Kalundborg is to become a museum documenting the radio history of the site.
